2025 local government election coverage

Updated 4.17pm, October 11.

Albany Ward – Councillor

Long serving councillor Wayne Walker has lost his seat on Auckland Council based on provisional results. In Albany Ward, Victoria Short on the Fix Auckland ticket and incumbent John Watson on the Putting People First ticket with 12,862 to 12,299 respectively, seem set to take the two seats.

Walker is sitting in third position with 8326 votes, and Samuel Mills from Act Local on 6138.

Nine candidates contested for the two positions.

Gary Brown says that of course, he was disappointed about missing out on the Albany Ward councillor position, but was delighted that Victoria Short had come through.

“Congratulations to her and John. Victoria will do an amazing job, and it’s great to get fresh blood on the council.”

He says he was pleased to get back on the Local Board along with Leanne Willis, who was on the same ticket.

“We work well together, and we’ll continue on with the projects and working for the Coast community.”

Hibiscus and Bays Local Board (Hibiscus Coast Subdivision)

In the race for the four spots on the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board (Hibiscus Coast Subdivision), the Coast Community ticket candidates, Jake Law and Gemma Moffat have taken the first two places, with 6233 and 5742 votes respectively. Coast People candidates Gary Brown and Leane Willis follow at third and fourth positions, with 5148 and 4095 votes respectively.

Coast Community candidate Nick Rado sits not far behind on 3607 votes followed by ACT local candidate Samuel Mills 3498, so the fourth place on the board may still be up for grabs.

Jake Law says his team are “absolutely stoked at this amazing result”, although they will have to wait on special votes and the Saturday count to see if Nick Rado secures the fourth position on the board.

“Our vision for the Hibiscus Coast and promise to be dedicated and active representatives clearly resonated with voters. We are happy about doing so well and are ready to work hard for the next three years to get good results for the Coast community.”

Seventeen candidates contested for the four positions.

Preliminary results include votes received on the morning of Saturday, October 11. Special votes are still not included. Preliminary results will be announced on Monday.

Final results and official results, including special votes, will be released by Friday (October 17).

Kaipara District Council – Mayor

The Mayoralty race in Kaipara looks like being a close one, with current deputy mayor Jonathan Larsen in front on provisional figures. Larsen has 2534 votes, ahead of Snow Tane (2482 votes) and Jason Smith (2460). Fourth candidate Ash Nayyar has 982.

Progress results represent approximately 90 per cent of ordinary votes and exclude hand delivered votes received on the Saturday morning and special votes. Results may change between the progress stage and the final count.

Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Ward

Incumbent councillors Rachael Williams and Craig Jepson are leading the poll in the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Ward, with Luke Canton looking like he will take the third seat.

Northland Regional Council

Māori Ward
Northland Regional Council voters have rejected the idea of a Māori ward. More than half of the councils voting were also holding binding referendums on whether to keep or remove their Māori wards or constituencies. NRC decided last year to retain its Māori ward, but had to hold a poll during the current election. On preliminary figures, a total of 26,676 voted to remove the Māori ward and 24,586 voted to keep it. The final outcome will be effective for the 2028 and 2031 elections.

Coastal South General Constituency
It looks like there will be a new face representing the Coastal South General Constituency on the NRC. Mangawhai’s John Hunt is 419 votes ahead of current rep Rick Stolwerk. Hunt was CEO of Harbour Basketball for 15 years; and has actively been involved in the environmental protection of Bream Tail and is the treasurer of the Waipu Tennis Club.

Otamatea Ward

With 90 per cent of votes counted, Mike Schimanski (674 votes) and Mark Vincent (657 votes) look set to fill the two vacancies on the Otamatea Ward on Kaipara District Council. Denise Rogers is in third place with 605 votes.

Rodney Local Board

Northern Rodney Subdivision
Sitting Rodney Local Board member Colin Smith has been re-elected, along with Puhoi resident Paul Manton. The two board members will represent the new Northern Rodney subdivision. The unsuccessful candidates were Greg Doherty, Joshua Grimstock, and James Pemberton.

Warkworth Subdivision
Current Rodney Local Board members Ivan Wagstaff and Tim Holdgate, representing the Warkworth subdivision, have been returned on provisional figures.

Wagstaff, who topped the poll, says he believes that the Local Board connected well with the community during the last term, and people saw the results.

“I pretty much campaigned by letting our record speak for itself,” he says. “I think people could see they had someone in their corner.”

Wagstaff says he is looking forward to the next term, which will be his second on the board.

Four candidates contested the subdivision, with David Robb and Taabeta Tebau being unsuccessful.
