Art flourishes at home

While at home in their ‘bubbles’, local artists have found the time to create new work.

At the start of the Alert Level 4 lockdown, Estuary Arts Centre manager Kim Boyd asked artists to share projects online – 53 works were posted on the centre’s facebook page in three weeks.

Helensville artist Leda Daniel is among those who posted images of her work. She says during the lockdown her studio became her oasis, where she spends many hours working – therefore she called her most recent work ‘Oasis’.

Kim has also needed an outlet to de-stress, and says she plunged herself into her ceramics during breaks from the computer.

“I found it to provide the perfect balance of left/right brain work,” she says. “I am ever grateful to be a creative person in lockdown.”

Kim says when Estuary Arts Centre is able to reopen its Orewa gallery and education centre, she has plans to run a Covid Collective group exhibition to showcase what the artists have been doing.

“It’s a great positive after what has been a real negative for all of us,” she says.
