David Wilmot is taking his skills in business and engineering and embarking on a new challenge as owner of Elite Window Solutions in Morrison Drive, Warkworth.
Business is in David’s blood. His father Les started Wilmot Motors in Warkworth in 1956, while David’s grandfather, Archibald, owned a garage in Matakana.
Inspired by the practical-minded, problem-solving ethos of his forebears, David studied engineering and embarked on a career in the industry.
“I’ve always enjoyed tinkering with things and learning how things work. I think that comes from growing up around the garage.”
He always knew he would return to Mahurangi and he started managing the family business in 2007.
But, last year the family agreed it was time for a change and sold the business to Albany Toyota in August.
Plans to have some time out soon went out the window and David began investigating business opportunities in the region. He took on Elite Window Solutions in May.
“With my technical background and the growth in the construction industry, it just seemed right.
“Everywhere you look at the moment there’s a building site and everyday we are getting more house plans come through the door.”
Elite Window Solutions makes custom-made aluminium joinery for windows and doors, working with builders, architects and homeowners.
Glass is becoming an integral feature of modern architecture and new developments and trends are continuing to push the industry into new areas, David says.
Precision joinery is becoming a greater focus, as new designs require seamless fittings for doors and windows, with a very low margin of error.
There are also innovations in insulation, such as specialty Low E glass which can help retain heat in the winter and also keep your house cool in the summer by reflecting heat.
David thanked Elite Windows founders Philip and Angela Brangwynne, who started the business about 10 years ago.
