Charges laid for gate crashing

A local man has been charged with careless driving after a pest proof gate at Shakespear Open Sanctuary was torn off its hinges in January.

The gate was at the entrance to the NZ Defence Force land at Army Bay and the Defence Force provided security camera footage of the incident.

A vehicle hit the gate at speed on January 28 at around midnight.

Snr Sergeant Jason Homan of Orewa Police says that a 27-year-old local man has appeared in the North Shore District Court on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle.

The gate has since been repaired. Who will pay for the damage remains unclear, although the Defence Force and Auckland Council may seek reparation.
