Community support group set up

A COVID-19 community support group has been set up to coordinate and share information for people who need help during quarantine and volunteers who are able to provide it.

Mahurangi Caremongers has been set up by Matakana resident Janis Grummitt, who founded a group that was already looking at ways to address crises in the area, before the COVID-19 situation became critical.

The project is now being led and coordinated by a number of people and organisations, including  One Warkworth’s Murray Chapman, plus Warkworth Rotary and Lions, to build community support and mobilisation for Warkworth, Matakana, Leigh, Omaha, Point Wells, Snells Beach, Algies Bay and Mahurangi East.

As well as a Facebook page, an email address and database is being established so Mahurangi Caremongers can act as core support for smaller communities.

Murray Chapman says they are looking for people who can act as local contacts and coordinators.

“Myself, Peter Henderson from Warkworth Lions and Grant Henderson are putting together a database so we can match those who need help with someone who can assist them,” he says. “The idea being that we are looking for people in each part of a town or area who we can pass details to of those who need help.

“If we can get someone in most streets, we will be able make sure no elderly person or ill person has to fend for themselves. And if we all work together, we can make this time a little easier for those less fortunate in our community and we can make some new friends along the way.”
