The future of this Council owned building in Silverdale will be decided in the coming months.
The issue of whether to renovate or demolish the former Bowling Club building in Silverdale Memorial Park will be considered by Auckland Council in the coming months.Weathertightness and structural surveys of the building commissioned by Auckland Council (and obtained by Hibiscus Matters under the Official Information Act) show that it is in a very poor state.
The report by Hampton Jones, dated August, 2016, found “moisture ingress and timber decay to the structural components” of the building and that parts were “significantly suffering from decay/water damage and flooding below its suspended floor”.
The report concludes that a significant amount of remedial work would be required to bring the building up to current code. The estimated costs of such work were withheld from the copy supplied to the paper.
Initial tests last year found that most of the asbestos was in structures outside the main building (the fence, sheds and toilets). However, a later report by ATL Ltd identified asbestos containing materials in the ceiling space, under the floor and on the outside of the building.
Following receipt of this report, Council prohibited public access to the property, which is leased by the Nippon Judo Club as well as the No 5 (Rodney) Squadron of the Air Training Corps.
Council is now considering the future of the building and says that one option is to close it indefinitely.
