At the age of 13, Alex Wood has got used to seeing her stories in print.
Four years ago, she won the Hibiscus Coast Writers competition, and her work was also published in their booklet in 2012.
She won the Margaret Mahy Starlight Essay competition in 2013, and last year had a story called An Unlikely Hero published in the Childrenz One book. The book is a collection of the best stories entered in Rangitawa Publishing’s annual competition and sells on Amazon.
This year, Alex has another of her stories appearing in the Rangitawa book. She was one of the youngest competitors in the 12–17-year-old category, so her work was selected from a large number of stories by considerably older writers.
The Wentworth College student has always loved creative writing and has many handwritten drafts of unfinished stories piling up at her Army Bay home.
She says the ideas for her stories come from daydreaming and observing what is around her. Quirky characters and a sense of humour are a feature of her writing.
The latest Rangitawa Publishing book, called Childrenz Stories, is due to be published soon.
