Dogs to sniff out Foulbrood

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) says training dogs to sniff out the highly infectious bacterial disease American Foulbrood (AFB) in beehives could save New Zealand’s beekeeping industry millions of dollars a year.

To further this goal, MPI is contributing $50,000 to a research project that aims to find a method of training dogs by creating a “scent picture” of the disease.

The project is led by DownUnder Honey, in partnership with the K9 Search Medical Detection Training Centre and Massey University.
