Fire station to be demolished

The former Mangawhai fire station at 9 Wood Street will be demolished.

The Council-owned building has been unoccupied since the volunteer brigade shifted to its new premises on Molesworth Drive late last year.

A Kaipara District Council engineer’s investigation found the building was leaking, with significant structural damage and rotting timber, as well as possible damage to the foundations.

“The building has very little natural light and has been deemed earthquake prone,” the report said.

The investigation found that if the building was left in place, it would deteriorate further creating a safety risk.

Council says it would not be cost-effective to remediate the structure and councillors voted yesterday to demolish it.

The site will be incorporated into a new design for the Wood Street revitalisation project.

The land will be cleared in December and used as a temporary public space.
