A mobile ice cream vendor has been granted a licence to sell ice cream in the Orewa Reserve car park and Stanmore Bay Reserve car park this summer.
An ice cream vendor has been seen operating occasionally in the Orewa Reserve car park on previous occasions but this is the first time one has been granted the licence that is required from the local board as land owner.
At its meeting last month, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board granted Super Kool Ice Cream’s application to operate its ice cream van for a trial period of three months, from November 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018.
The van is only allowed to operate at the specific sites mentioned for approximately 30 minutes at any one time, between 12noon and 5pm on weekends and during school holidays.
After the trial period, a longer-term approval may be considered by the local board if requested by the applicant.
At the meeting, Council staff told the local board members that previous applications had been turned down because of competition with local ice cream sellers.
However, a High Court ruling has since established that competition cannot be used as a reason to decline such an application.
The local board does however have the power to decline a licence application, without giving a reason, if it chooses to do so.
