Major marine pest study set for Kaipara

The first major survey of marine pests in the Kaipara Harbour for more than a decade is scheduled to take place this month.

Marine biosecurity experts from NIWA have been contracted to carry out the 10-day survey by Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The last significant marine pest survey carried out in the 947 square kilometre harbour was in 2006. Diver searches, crab traps, seafloor sampling and shore searches will be carried out from May 13 to 24, weather permitting.
