Mayoral Candidates Meeting in Wellsford

Roading, rural/urban rates equity, preferred contractor arrangements and targeted rates were the main items discussed at a Mayoral Candidates Meeting in Wellsford last night.

While the organisers, the Landowners and Contractors Association, had hoped to have had at least five candidates on the stage, only Craig Lord, Gary Brown and Wayne Brown turned up.

Efeso Collins pulled out a few days before the meeting and Viv Beck cancelled at the last minute.

Association chair Brian Mason said today it was disappointing.

“It probably means they don’t see us as a priority – there’s not a lot of votes up here to catch,” he said.

“Nevertheless, it was still a very successful meeting with about 120 people in attendance and some good discussion.”

Lord announced that if elected, he would introduce an Independent Services and Performance Auditor – a watch dog for the ratepayers.

Wellsford subdivision presentative Colin Smith, who is seeking a third term on the Rodney Local Board, spoke about the work he felt was still to be done. He is being challenged for the seat by Libby Clews, who did not attend after a social media spat with the organisers over party/group affiliations.

Both Lord and Gary Brown stayed to chat with members of the public at the end of the meeting.
