The mother of murdered police officer Constable Matthew Hunt has started a petition calling on the Government to decline parole eligibility for offenders convicted of killing a police officer.
Diane Hunt’s petition requests the law change in memory of her son Matthew, 28, who was killed on duty during an armed incident in Massey on June 19. Matthew grew up in Orewa and was well-known on the Hibiscus Coast and in Warkworth.
The petition states, “My son lost his life whilst serving his country. If you truly believe what was said by numerous politicians after Matthew’s death, that police lives matter, passing this legislation should be done without delay.
“I believe our sentencing laws for murder do not adequately condemn the actions that result in the murder of police officers.”
A man has been charged with Constable Hunt’s murder while a woman has been charged as an accessory to his murder.
