The first round of public input into the Orewa Beach seawall that Council is proposing to build from Kohu Street to Marine View winds up this month.
An invitation-only technical workshop takes place in Orewa on March 9. The workshop is to discuss the design, as proposed, in detail. Council staff are also expected to clarify what changes have been made to the plans in response to submissions and issues raised to date.
A Beach Open Day is proposed for mid-March (date yet to be confirmed), which will take place at up to three locations along the proposed seawall site. The aim of this is to illustrate some physical configurations of the proposed structure – of particular interest is how much dry beach it will take up.
Protecting the grass reserve, private property and public access are the paramount considerations in the development of the seawall proposals. Staff working on the project say that if nothing is done, the remaining Esplanade Reserve land could be lost to erosion, along with high tide access for the public.
The proposed 640m long wall is built from rock masonry and rock rip rap and includes a walkway about 2m wide on top, along with four beach access points.
Consultation began towards the end of last year and closes on March 31.
When this part of the consultation is over, Council will apply for resource consent, seeking full public notification – this means the public can make formal submissions. Info: shapeauckland.co.nz
