A new newspaper rolled off the presses this week, produced by a team of young writers and photographers at Orewa North School.School newspapers almost seem a thing of the past, replaced by newsletters.

However, Orewa North teacher Karina Jarnell and her daughter, Year 6 student Elise Jarnell, wanted a project based around student contributions.

“We wanted people to see themselves in the paper,” Elise says.

The first edition, printed in the school’s trademark blue and sent to 200 families last week, includes interviews with teachers, a sports report, a recipe, competition and jokes. The competitions will be judged by caretaker Mr Mogg, who the children selected because he’s impartial.

Karina says fun was top of the list of outcomes from producing a monthly paper, but that it also gives the children confidence seeing their work in print and provides a showcase for some very talented students.
