Panic buying affects banana stocks

New Zealanders’ favourite fruit, bananas, are in short supply at some Countdown supermarkets.

A Countdown spokesperson says that unfortunately, due to unprecedented demand over the last few weeks, as well as a delayed shipment, its stores do have minor supply issues with bananas.

“We’re working really hard with our banana growers to get more stock in and we’ll continue to manage this as best we can,” the spokesperson says.

Meanwhile Foodstuffs NZ, owner of New World, Pak ‘n’ Save and 4Square supermarkets, says its stores are not experiencing a banana shortage at this time and it encourages New Zealanders to shop normally.
