Scaffold goes up on The Nautilus

Work will begin this weekend on the Nautilus apartment building in Orewa.

The work is expected to take two years and will fix its severe weather-tightness issues.

Legacy Construction, the company carrying out the repair work on the Nautilus will take over use of part of the Orewa Library car park for a site compound from November 12. Access to the carpark was granted to the building’s owner by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board in July.

Prendos NZ is project managing the work, and director Philip O’Sullivan says that it is business as usual for the library, with no change to opening hours. There will, however, be less public carparks available.

Mr O’Sullivan says the goal is to minimise disruption to retailers, residents, and particularly those who use the library and its carpark.

The Nautilus will be entirely re-clad. The work will be completed in four stages, starting at the tail end of the building.

As each stage is completed, the construction team will move scaffolding onto the next stage until the work is completed.

Funding of around $25 million for repairs to the Nautilus was obtained, largely from Auckland Council, via a case in the High Court.

Photos of the work will be put up on Hibiscus Matters’ Facebook page as it happens.
