What will happen to this piece of land in Silverdale Village, known as “the Green”, is something that the Silverdale community is anxious to find out.
The fate of a large block of commercial land in the centre of Silverdale Village has the community on tenterhooks.The land formed part of the estate of well-known local, the late George Painton.
The property is made up of several commercial buildings, from the block in Silverdale Street currently occupied by businesses that include Raw Essentials and the Mr T café, around the corner of Agency Lane to NZ at Home and right up to Silverdale Marine.
It includes the land on the corner of Silverdale St and Agency Lane, currently grassed, which locals know as “the Green” and it is the possibility of this being sold that has caused the most consternation.
Over the years the Painton family has allowed the community to use that grassed portion of their land for outdoor stalls at the regular Saturday market – something market coordinator Jill Ansell says the community is very grateful for.
She was worried when a member of the Painton family told her that the entire block could be put on the market.
She says if the land is no longer available for the Saturday market, it will mean finding alternative sites for 10 or more stalls. “It will also be missed as a rare green space in the middle of the shopping area,” she says.
Silverdale Area Business Association member Lorraine Sampson says that the former Rodney District Council made an offer for the land back at the time when George Painton purchased it. She says she alerted Auckland Council of the potential for the land to come back on the market, with a view to Council purchasing “the Green” as a public amenity.
Paul Painton was contacted regarding the potential sale, but declined to comment.
