Sirens signalled for New Year

Tsunami sirens could be installed in Orewa early next year, although no exact timeframe has yet been set.
Auckland Council acting director of Emergency Management, Sarah Sinclair, says the sirens are part of a pilot.

“As part of our ongoing tsunami risk workstream, we reviewed coastal communities most at risk from a tsunami and a pilot study on local tsunami warning sirens was launched in Orewa,” Sarah says. “This pilot will inform us of the needs and the most appropriate education methods for our at-risk communities, and includes evaluating current siren technology and noise modelling of who would hear the alerts, and how they will learn what to do.”

She says Emergency Management envisages sirens will be installed by early 2020 in Orewa as part of the pilot, along with a public awareness campaign.
