Business – Showcasing Ōrewa

Guest columnist Hellen Wilkins

Our role as the Ōrewa Business Association is to represent, support and advocate for local businesses across every sector from retailers and hospitality, through to professional and specialist services and accommodation. We know what’s helpful for one industry might not always serve another, so we’re always open to feedback on how we can better tailor our efforts. The important thing is that we’re here, we’re listening, and we’re committed to making Ōrewa the best possible place to do business.

Of course, Ōrewa is just one part of the wider Hibiscus Coast, and the challenges we see here are echoed across the Coast, across the region and indeed across Auckland and New Zealand. Running a business has never been easy, and in today’s environment many are feeling the pinch more than ever. Rising costs, cautious consumer spending, and ongoing uncertainty make it a challenge for some businesses to keep the doors open, let alone thrive. We’re proud of the resilience and creativity our business community implemented through Covid times and continue to show – but we also recognise the pressures that are part of the current landscape.

For us, one of the ways we work toward this is by keeping Ōrewa firmly on the map as a destination. The more people who come into town, the more opportunities for every business. Our events, promotions, and marketing campaigns are designed to draw visitors in, highlight what Ōrewa has to offer, and give locals reasons to return – all boosting retail spend. From major events that bring thousands to town to the Ōrewa Beach Guide distributed nationwide, we’re focused on lifting visibility and foot traffic. Just as important is the commitment of our locals, who continue to support the shops, services, and eateries that make Ōrewa unique.

But it’s not just about the quantity of customers, it’s about the quality of their experience. We want everyone who comes to Ōrewa to leave with a great impression, whether they’re here for a specialist appointment, a coffee, a day’s shopping, or a holiday by the beach. That’s why we work with businesses, Council, Local Board and community partners to improve everything from streetscapes and signage through to safety and accessibility. A vibrant, welcoming environment benefits not only customers but also the businesses themselves. Some things take time, but we persevere in the background while processes take place until an outcome is gained.

Ōrewa’s strength lies in its people: our locals, our visitors, and our business community. The Business Association’s role is to connect those dots, making sure the energy and vibrancy of our town keeps growing. While challenges will always exist, our focus is firmly on creating opportunities for businesses to succeed, and for Ōrewa to shine.
