Sustainable Kaipara – Matariki: A time to reset with purpose

Matariki is an opportunity to reflect on how, either individually or as part of a group, we can each take some practical steps towards meeting the environmental challenges in front of us.

Matariki, the Māori New Year, invites us to pause, reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plant seeds for a better future.

At Sustainable Kaipara, this season speaks to the heart of what we do. Matariki reminds us that living in balance with nature isn’t just an idea; it’s a responsibility. As we face the realities of climate change, biodiversity loss and growing waste, the call to act with intention feels more urgent than ever.

To be honest we are feeling pretty overwhelmed. How much can one person do, or one small organisation? The scale of the environmental challenges is daunting. Every year, over nine million tonnes of plastic enter the world’s oceans, and global carbon emissions continue to rise. It’s easy to feel like individual actions are just drops in an ocean.

At Sustainable Kaipara, we have seen first-hand how small actions can lead to big impacts. Through our weekly food scrap collection service in Mangawhai, we have diverted over 50,000 kilograms of food scraps from landfills, nourishing local gardens and supporting community initiatives. This is just one example of how individuals can create real change.

This Matariki, we invite you to be part of this movement. Consider starting a composting system at home, participating in local clean-up events, or supporting sustainable practices in your community. Every small action contributes to a larger, positive impact on our environment.

It’s also a chance to think practically. How can our Matariki celebrations reflect our values? This could be as simple as sharing seasonal, locally grown kai, avoiding single-use plastics, or repurposing decorations rather than buying new. When we plan gatherings that tread lightly on the earth, we honour both the past and the future.

We’ve seen the power of small actions across our community, from composting workshops and local clean-ups to food forest projects and zero-waste events. These aren’t just “sustainability ideas”. They are living examples of how we show up for each other and for the whenua. They show what’s possible when people come together with shared purpose.

This Matariki, we invite you to set intentions that nurture more than just personal growth. What is one small, sustainable action you could take this season? Could you plant a garden, reduce your household waste or join a local initiative?

Matariki gives us a powerful framework for that journey: living with purpose, looking after one another and walking gently on the earth. He waka eke noa – We’re all in this together.
