As someone who’s lived the volunteer life and worked closely with young volunteers for many years, I believe volunteering is one of the most powerful, life-shaping things a young person can do. Here are a few reflections on why it matters.
Volunteering offers a refreshing counterbalance to the pressures of modern life. In a world that often pushes young people toward careerism, hustle culture, and chasing the nine to five, volunteering reminds us that life is about more than a paycheck. It opens space to serve others, contribute to something meaningful, and build genuine connection with people and community. It also fuels purpose and passion; qualities that young people are often searching and yearning for.
More than that, volunteering builds servant leaders. These are the kind of leaders our world needs more of.
Servant leaders are people who lift others up, not by being ego-driven, but by being people-focused. They listen well, act with humility, and prioritise the growth and wellbeing of others. Volunteering shapes this kind of character. It teaches responsibility, builds confidence, and grows empathy.
Volunteering also helps young people discover their passions and gain experience. It’s often in these unpaid roles that interests become clear, connections grow, and opportunities begin to open.
Many young people I know (including myself) have found jobs or chosen study pathways that began with simply offering time. Just a couple of weeks ago, a young person who’d been out of work and navigating mental health challenges decided to give volunteering a go. They joined in, loved it, and asked when they could come back. It gave them an extra boost of confidence to get back out into the world.
And finally, we must not forget that volunteering is fun. Sure, there are days it might feel like hard work, but more often it brings deep rooted joy and fulfillment. It creates friendships, good memories, and even releases feel-good endorphins, what some call “the helper’s high.”
So, if you’re a young person, or you have one in your life, consider making volunteering part of the journey. Whether it’s at a local event, sports club, community group, or charity, this is a wonderful part of life to experience that can be formative, fulfilling and foundational for the future.
