Dry spell ends over a wet Waitangi

Richard Green was under the pump before recent rain.

Any drought was well and truly broken over a wet and humid Waitangi weekend, with some Mahurangi gauges recording well over 120mm over the Sunday night.

The break in the weather came just at the right time for many, as more tanks emptied and suppliers were getting stretched. Artesian and Solway Water owner operator Christine Walker said the wait times were up to around two weeks before the rains came, and had been on the verge of getting much longer over a short space of time. And although most tanks are now full again, she warned that summer wasn’t over.

“People can and do cancel, that’s the way the business works, but a lot of people are rescheduling for March and April, because it could stay dry for a long time yet,” she said.
