Bowls club rejectsOaks development plan

A proposal to build a retirement complex on land owned by Bowls Warkworth has fallen through, the club announced last week.

The company behind the Warkworth Oaks retirement complex, Real Living, wanted to buy part of Bowls Warkworth’s land in Mill Lane to develop a high-rise retirement apartment block and care facility on two sides of the club’s premises.

In return, the Oaks was offering to redevelop and cover the bowling green nearest the road, and upgrade its clubrooms.

However, an offer made recently by Real Living has been rejected by the club. President John Hurdley said although all dealings had been extremely informative and cordial, an agreement could not be reached.

“Unfortunately a settlement could not be agreed upon and the club is pursuing other opportunities to achieve their aims,” he said.

Hurdley said last month that any such offer would have to be attractive to Bowls Warkworth (MM, May 13).

“The club owns a very valuable piece of land and we are not in the business of giving it away,” he said. “If The Oaks wants it, they will have to make it worthwhile.”
