Gongs go to surf lifesaving volunteers

The Coast’s surf lifeguards were recognised for the work they put in at Ōrewa and Red Beach over summer, at the Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence on Saturday 17 July. Red Beach and Ōrewa clubs each picked up seven trophies.

Red Beach’s included: Outstanding Contribution to Junior Surf, Claire Burgham; Junior Coach of the Year, Brendon Rutledge-Malyon; Under-19 Sportsman, Patrick Makgil; Developing Surf Official, Andrew Short; and Surf Lifeguard of the Year, Harry Mellor. The club also picked up the Cath & Eddie Millar Cup for junior surf competition and won the Northern Region Junior Surf Championships. Long-serving Red Beach club member Michelle Newton was honoured with a life membership.

Ōrewa picked up six individual sports titles for its strong youth contingent – the Under-14 title went jointly to Elizabeth Brennan and Mason King, and the Under-15 jointly to Isla Petherbridge and Kailen Brackebush. George Wenman won the Under-17 Sportsman and the Under-19 Sportswoman was Kendra Stinson. Examiner of the Year was Benny Larsen. 

Service Awards went to Jon Copeland, Jenny Fergus and Kelly McColl of Ōrewa and Peter Kramer of Red Beach.
