Kids step up for rippa rugby competition

A total of 28 teams from six local primary schools competed in an all-day rippa rugby competition at the Warkworth Showgrounds on May 17.

The competition is one of a number run by North Harbour Rugby across Rodney and the North Shore.

Those competing at the showgrounds were Warkworth, Horizon, Snells Beach, Matakana, Ahuroa, Tomarata and Kaipara Flats.

North Harbour Rugby manager junior rugby Vyron Smith says he was pleased with how the tournament came together. “This competition is all about fun and the children seemed to be enjoying themselves,” Vyron says.

“It’s also about development and there is some promising talent in Mahurangi for the future of North Harbour rugby.” Vyron has just taken over the junior manager role, a new position, after playing for North Harbour’s championship winning team in 2016.

He manages  90 primary school and 30 intermediate school teams, organising competitions for up to 1100 students at a time in the area.

“I’m passionate about rugby and about getting children involved in the sport so I hope to develop a strong junior group to feed into the senior sides.”

After the success of the Warkworth competition he hopes North Harbour will return with the tournament at the showgrounds again in term four.
