The inaugural Tag New Zealand Association – TNZA Nationals was hosted at the HBC Raiders at the beginning of the month.

The event showcased talent from across the country and attracted more than 1000 players from Canterbury, Wellington, North Harbour and the Hibiscus Coast as well as an invitational New Zealand Navy Team.

Hibiscus Coast Tag committee chair Takangaroa Davison says it was a huge success with thousands of spectators attending as well. The teams covered a wide range of grades, from under 10s to over 40, he says, with the Hibiscus Coast scoring a few gold medals as well.

The organisers also thank everyone that made the event happen: “TNZA for your unreal organisation of the competition, our HBC Raiders Tag Committee, the officials, referees and volunteers that committed their time and talents. The managers, coaches, physios and support staff for getting your teams together. The food vendors, clean up crews and our very own kitchen queens in The Galley, thank you for holding it down! And lastly to all the players, supporters and awesome community for investing in this competition and making it what it was.”

Davison says it was a huge boost for the sport, which had declined after Covid. However, the start of the season had seen Tag Teams return to pre-Covid levels, he says.
