Whangaparāoa College’s Head Boy Noah Collier has fought his way to become the boxing New Zealand Youth 70kg Champion.
The competition took place in Porirua on September 23 to 27, where Noah won all four of his games with multiple knockouts.
Noah says his journey began with kickboxing, but he found himself using a lot more arms than his opponents. When his dad suggested he try boxing, he was quick to fall in love with the sport. Just six months after picking up the sport, he got a last-minute opportunity to compete in a tournament. He advanced all the way to the national finals, where he was narrowly defeated by the eventual champion. However, since then, Noah has faced that same opponent again – and this time, he came out on top.
His love of the sport, along with the comfortable routine he has set, is what keeps his victories going.
“I can’t even go a week without thinking about it,” he says.
Currently, he’s training to compete in the Auckland Marathon on November 2, and a fight against an Australian opponent in Wellington on November 9.
Although he spends a lot of his time in both school and training, Noah also enjoys running, spearfishing in the summertime, and cooking when he can. Someday, Noah aims to represent New Zealand in the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, his next (and toughest) fight is on his final exams and, next year, his first year of university studying law. Next year, he will also represent New Zealand at the Youth World Championships.
