The Kowhai Singers will bring one of classical music’s great choral masterpieces to Warkworth with a performance of Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation next month.
In what promises to be a highlight of the choir’s year, around 30 singers will take to the stage at the Warkworth Town Hall on Saturday November 21.
Haydn’s The Creation, celebrated for its vivid musical depiction of the creation of the world, is a major work in the choral repertoire.
The concert will feature musical director Ken Leech at the helm, accompanied by acclaimed organist Michael Bell and three guest soloists.
Soprano Emma Pearson, who has worked closely with Mahurangi College students this year, will be joined by rising singers Will King, as bass soloist, and Tom Varney, as tenor soloist.
For the Kowhai Singers, who have been a cornerstone of the Mahurangi arts scene for more than 40 years, the performance represents an ambitious undertaking and an opportunity to bring a major classical work to the local community.
Musical director Ken Leech says that bringing singers together to perform a masterpiece like The Creation, with professional soloists and Bell on organ, offers the community a professional-level experience.
The concert will be the choir’s third production this year, bringing another successful season to a close. The performance has received support from the Creative Communities Scheme, which aims to encourage participation in the arts and strengthen creative opportunities within local communities.
The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available online at Trybooking or from Briar Rose Flowers in Warkworth for $25, as well as at the door for $30. Students free.
