Venus makes new fans at Silverdale tennis

Michael Venus was a popular tennis opponent at Silverdale Tennis Club last month.

Olympic tennis player Michael Venus was a guest at Silverdale Tennis Club last month, where he hit shots to some of the club’s youngest players and gave them a close up look at the bronze medal he won at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.

The medal, which he won with doubles partner Marcus Daniell, was New Zealand’s first Olympic tennis medal in 109 years.

Venus was at the club to promote Tennis NZ’s Hot Shot Tennis junior programme.

Tennis Hot Shots is the national starter tennis programme and uses smaller courts, shorter racquets and softer balls.

Silverdale Tennis Club coach Hayden Wright of AceEm Tennis says the junior programme has grown significantly recently, with Hot Shots being offered most days of the week at the club, in schools and during school holidays. It is also available at Ōrewa and Whangaparāoa Tennis Clubs.

This summer it starts at Silverdale on February 7. Info: email tennis@aceem.co.nz or phone Hayden, 021 747 839.
