Tennis with cardio twist

If you thought that all tennis was a cardio workout – even if it’s just chasing the ball after failing to hit it – think again.

A fun option that combines a bit of cardio exercise with a bit of tennis has been re-introduced after several years’ absence at Silverdale Tennis Club.

It has been brought back by club coach Hayden Wright of AceEm who says it seems the right time for something that is all about fun and social interaction, as well as tennis and fitness. Cardio Tennis is open to the whole community – whether you are a club member or not.

There’s no need for any previous tennis experience as each session is targeted to the ability of participants and rackets can be provided.

Hayden says previous Cardio Tennis players have included people aged from 7-84 years, as well as families.

The sessions include a warm up, with a few tennis ball-related activities and games; some drills where the ball is fed to the player and returned, interspersed with a little running.

The tennis component could be three or four players opposing each other, with little spurts of aerobic activity in between.

At the end is a warm down and stretch. “What I love about this, and tennis in general, is that it’s intergenerational and provides an enjoyable fitness session without going to the gym,” Hayden says.

The hour-long sessions cost $15 each, or $120 for 10. However, Hayden will also be offering a number of free sessions prior to Christmas.
