There’s a chance to stop and literally smell the roses in Puhoi this month, when Ahuroa Road resident Liz McLaren hosts her annual open garden ramble to raise funds for the Puhoi Volunteer Fire Brigade on Sunday, November 30.
Previously held in high summer, the earlier timing of this year’s event means the roses will be in full bloom, but there is far more than that to see on the large riverside property – there’s also a lily pond, an orchard, native bush, big vegie gardens, expansive lawns and many specimen trees.
“People can bring their afternoon tea, wine, beer and so on and relax under the big trees and catch up with friends after a wander around. There are lots of tui, wood pigeon, quail, pheasant and a few little tomtits around as well,” she says.
“It’s all to support our fabulous volunteers, keeping us and our properties safe. They do so much for the community, we consider that we, as a community, can show our appreciation.”
The fire brigade will be on-site themselves this year, giving displays of CPR and treatment for cardiac arrest, which McLaren says “will be such an amazing thing for the general public to observe”.
There will also be Lisa Jane’s Coffee and real fruit ice cream for sale, as well as a 4×4 to help anyone who may need a lift to enjoy the gardens.
The gates at 198 Ahuroa Road open at 1.30pm and entry costs $10 for adults and a gold coin for children – cash only.
