A great day’s fishing and a fun-filled evening were enjoyed earlier this month, when the Warkworth Gamefish Club’s annual women’s competition was held.
Almost ideal weather saw 44 women and two girls heading out on the water on November 8, from 6am, followed by a measure-in, prizegiving and post-match dinner at the Sandspit Yacht Club Kitchen & Bar.
A club spokesperson said all boats had a great day.
“Most anglers reported that they got into some steady fishing, but as the results suggest, some found some exceptional fishing. It was very tight at the top,” they said.
Fish caught on the day were measured, rather than weighed, a judging method that the club also uses in at least one other contest.
“We are proud of our measure-in competition format, which gives our competitors the choice between bringing each fish home for tea or releasing them (after a quick photo). The same format applies to our annual 10-kilo comp, and it is great seeing this become the norm across New Zealand.”
As is usual for the women’s competition, attendees at the evening celebrations were encouraged to dress up in costume. This year’s theme was Around the World, with “a plane-load of pilots” voted the winners by yacht club staff.
Results: Snapper – 1 Hannah Johnson, 2 Alecia Herbert, 3 Nicola Rathe, 4 Hope Lucas, 5 Lee Adkins. Average-length snapper, A.J. Freeman. Kahawai – 1 Mattea Lucas, 2 Sam Dolovnikoff, 3 Antoinette Leuthard. Juniors – Snapper, Katie Adkin; Kahawai, Phoebe Dobbyn. $1500 lucky draw prize, Kelly Wyatt.
