Police host family fishing day

A fishing competition has been held in memory of fisherman, rod builder and policeman, the late John Dacre Goffin, for four years.

John served at Orewa Police station for more than 25 years. He died on Christmas Day 2010. Among his legacies is the custom fishing rods he made, known as the Jigstar.

This year’s fishing competition, on March 10, was a family affair with 30 adults and 25 children take part. It was organised by local policeman Sgt Steve Perris who says that the competition allows staff to remember a valued member of the team who helped many local families and youth.

The children loved the day out, with some fishing from boats and some from the wharf. All took home prizes along with their catch.

Fourteen-year-old Jayde Perris received the youth award for the heaviest snapper, which weighed in at 1.54kg, and Stuart Robertson reeled in the heaviest snapper in the adults’ category with a fish weighing 5.44kg.

Sponsors included Top Catch Whangaparaoa, Stihl Shop, Eddie Law, Hibiscus Coast Blue Light and the Police Association.
