Meri Kirihimete! The festive season has arrived already – full of parties, laughter and food that often takes centre stage. It’s a wonderful time for connecting with family and friends, but all that celebrating can make it tricky to stay in tune with your healthy habits.
It’s easy to find yourself reaching for an extra slice of pav or another spoonful of pudding when you’re already full – and to justify it with “but it’s only once a year!” The aftermath, though, often includes bloating, sluggishness and a dose of post-Christmas guilt that stretches well into January.
The good news? A balanced approach means you can enjoy the flavours of the season and feel great throughout. No need for the “New Year, new you” nonsense that comes after indulging in the fabulous festive feasts.
Here are five tried-and-true tips to help you stay well and enjoy every moment this Christmas.
Be smart with portions – You don’t have to fit every dish onto your plate. Take a moment to scan what’s on offer and choose what truly appeals. Leave room if there’s a dessert you love – Christmas favourites often make many appearances over the festive season, so you can always enjoy something you skip today, tomorrow.
Serve your own plate – When you choose your portions, you decide what balance works for you. Aim for the simple ‘healthy plate’ model: about a quarter protein, a quarter carbohydrates, and half colourful vegetables or salads. It’s a quick and easy visual way to build balance and still enjoy festive favourites.
Eat regularly – Skipping meals to ‘save space’ for a feast usually backfires. When you arrive hungry, nibbling turns into overeating before the main meal even starts. Stick to your usual routine with balanced breakfasts or snacks so you can approach festive meals with calm, mindful appetite.
Rethink your drinks – Hydration helps you feel better and keeps energy levels up. Alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – sparkling water with citrus, kombucha or homemade iced tea can be refreshing swaps. If you do enjoy alcohol, stay within the current New Zealand recommendations of up to two standard drinks a day for women (no more than 10 per week) and up to three for men (no more than 15 per week).
Keep moving – Summer’s the perfect time to be active outdoors. Whether it’s a beach walk, swim, backyard cricket or a splash with the kids, movement lifts your mood and helps balance out all the festive indulgence.
The Christmas period often comes with a mix of excitement, stress and extra responsibilities. Staying mindful – with food, rest, and activity – helps you enjoy what truly matters: connection, joy and feeling your best as the new year begins.
