Green thumbs, garden lovers and flower aficionados should make a beeline to the Warkworth Garden Club Annual Show at the Warkworth Town Hall on Friday, February 13, from noon to 4.30pm.

Annette Sharp, who has been the convenor for 20 years, said this was the third summer show for the club, which had previously held its rose shows in November for around 100 years.

The day of the event – Friday 13 – had not gone unnoticed by the organisers with a special Black Friday the 13th Arrangement (class 18 under section B), and prize yet to be determined.

“Hopefully, the date brings good luck on the day, not bad luck,” she joked.

By holding it in February, the idea was to attract as many people as possible.

“At this time of year, the dahlias are absolutely beautiful. The town hall gets fully transformed into a beautiful show of flowers and colour,” Sharp said.

She added that people who had gorgeous flowers, shrubs, fruit or vegetables in their gardens, or had made some tasty homemade preserves, should consider exhibiting.

“Anyone who would like to exhibit can register at the hall on the morning of the event and drop off their best flowers, plants or preserves from 7.30am – all exhibits must be staged by 9.30am.”

This year there are four show sections – A, Dahlias (vases provided), sponsored by Withers & Co; B, General Flowers & Foliage (including pots), sponsored by Central Landscape Supplies; C, Preserves, sponsored by Life Pharmacy Franklins; and D, Fruit & Vegetables, sponsored by Paxton-Penman lawyers.

Warkworth Oaks is also sponsoring the event, which is supported by the Rodney Local Board.

There’s no limit to the number of entries per person in each class, nor any on the size of potted entries – if you can carry it, you can enter it, though all entries must have been grown, or home made for preserves, by the entrants.

There are nine cups and trophies up for grabs including the prestigious President’s Cup, which is the president Lynne Crump’s top pick overall.

Judging will take place behind closed doors from 10am to noon, and general admission will open from noon to 4.30pm, with the prizegiving at 1pm.

Finalists from the Warkworth School flower show will be on display and their overall prize winners will be selected, plus the Heritage Rose Society will return with a beautiful display of heritage roses and advice from enthusiasts.

There will also be a trading table with plant sales and raffles.

Show schedules are available from Mahurangi Matters, as well as Warkworth, Mahurangi East and Point Wells Libraries. Visit www.warkworthgardenclub.co.nz to download a programme or contact Annette Sharp on 09 422 7766 for more info.
