A month of settled, dry weather is set to come to an end over King’s Birthday weekend, with MetService forecasting heavy rain and strong winds from Sunday as a low-pressure system moves in from the Tasman Sea.
It has been a remarkably dry May for most of the country, monopolised by settled high pressure weather conditions.
MetService meteorologist Samkelo Magwala said the calm, foggy, and frosty high pressure conditions that have dominated weather in Aotearoa New Zealand for the past month are coming to an end over the long weekend.
New Zealanders can expect two more mornings of fog or frost, before a low-pressure system approaches the country this weekend, bringing an unseasonably warm and humid start to meteorological winter.
Heavy rain and gale northerlies reach the South Island on Sunday, spreading on to the North Island overnight into Monday.
“Western and northern regions for both islands will see the bulk of the rainfall, especially Tasman and Marlborough,” Magwala said.
“Eastern regions are the place to be for King’s Birthday weekend, as they will stay sheltered from the worst of the wind and rain.”
