Repairs to deteriorating piles at the historic Sandspit Wharf have been put back to next Autumn after Auckland Transport found it had to apply to its parent body Auckland Council to undertake the work.
Until the work is complete, vehicle access to the wharf head and will be restricted by plastic bollards.
AT’s Manpreet Farrar says they will continue to monitor the structure regularly until it is repaired.
“We know the wharf is an important part of daily life for the community and we appreciate your patience while we work through the required approvals and planning,” she said in a letter to stakeholders.
“We were aiming to start works over winter, but it has been confirmed that we do need to apply for resource consent for the wharf head rebuild. This is because the wharf is in an area with special planning rules, known as overlays, which means Auckland Council needs to assess and approve the work before it can begin.
“As a result, repair work is now likely to start around March/April 2027. This extra time also allows us to source the materials needed to keep the stairs the same width, in response to community feedback.
“In the meantime, temporary vehicle restrictions will remain at the wharf head. Pedestrian access continues and ferry services are still operating.”
The wharf has been operating in some form since the mid 19th century, and is especially busy in summer when thousands of people flock to Kawau Island.
The main attraction is Mansion House, the former home of Governor General George Grey who bought the Island in 1862 for £3500 as a private retreat from public life.
He transformed the former copper mining site into an extravagant estate, importing exotic plants and animals and building a massive personal library.
