Aucklanders are being encouraged to add more native plants to their gardens this winter as part of Auckland Council’s Go Native campaign.
Thousands of free native seedlings will be available throughout this month from nine participating community nurseries across the region, with the initiative aimed at encouraging more people to plant natives at home.
The campaign supports Auckland Council’s Urban Ngahere Strategy, which aims to increase Auckland’s forest canopy to 30 per cent to create cooler, greener neighbourhoods and improve habitats for native wildlife.
Environmental Services general manager Samantha Hill says even small planting efforts can make a difference.
“Restoring native biodiversity doesn’t always require big actions,” she says. “It starts in backyards, shared gardens and local community groups. This campaign gives people a simple way to make a difference while celebrating the nurseries helping restore nature across Auckland.”
The council says community nurseries play an important role in growing plants for restoration projects, school planting days and local conservation efforts.
Native species such as kōwhai, harakeke and mānuka not only brighten gardens but also provide food and shelter for birds, bees, insects and other native wildlife. Harakeke can also help stabilise soil and reduce erosion.
The campaign aims to see 5000 Aucklanders plant native trees and shrubs this winter.
The initiative is funded through Council’s Natural Environment Targeted Rate, which supports environmental protection and community conservation projects across the region.
This month, residents can use Council’s online map to find their nearest participating nursery and collect a free seedling while stocks last. Some nurseries will also host weekend events where visitors can meet volunteers, get planting advice and learn which native species are best suited to their area.
Council says winter is one of the best times to plant natives, giving seedlings time to establish before the warmer months arrive.
