Have your say on Auckland’s waste rules

Auckland Council is seeking public feedback on proposed updates to its Waste Bylaw, with consultation now open until 11.59pm on February 22.

The Waste Bylaw sets rules for how waste is stored, collected, transported and disposed of across Tāmaki Makaurau, aiming to keep footpaths clear, reduce recycling contamination and improve long-term waste planning.

Regulatory and Safety Committee chair, Cr Josephine Bartley, says the proposed changes are largely administrative and will not affect most residents’ day-to-day routines or kerbside collections.

Key changes include expanding licensing requirements for waste facilities such as cleanfills, e-waste and resource recovery sites, streamlining licensing rules for waste collectors, clarifying waste storage requirements, and expanding approved disposal options like supermarket soft-plastic drop-off points.

The proposal also removes duplicated rules and alters guidance on bin use and prohibited items. Construction and demolition waste is excluded from this review, with further work planned.
