Pre-summer pothole blitz begins

Auckland Transport (AT) has relaunched its pre-summer Pothole Promise campaign, encouraging residents to report potholes so they can be repaired quickly ahead of the busy summer driving season.

The agency says it aims to fix 95 percent of potholes reported on Auckland’s main arterial and high-volume regional roads within 24 hours. Potholes on all other sealed roads will be repaired within five working days.

AT Road Asset Maintenance and Renewals group manager Alan Wallace says road crews are out year-round repairing potholes, but the longer, drier days across October and November make this an ideal time for a larger maintenance push.

“Last year our contractors repaired more than 6000 potholes across the region and we are committed to repairing them as quickly as possible,” Wallace says.

He says potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road surface, weakening the pavement underneath. Auckland’s high rainfall and ageing road network make them a recurring challenge.

Extra funding from Auckland Council and the Government is helping AT carry out more preventative work such as resurfacing, which should reduce the number of potholes in future.

Wallace says the public can play a key part by reporting potholes when they spot them, and including a photo if possible.

“Photos make a big difference in helping our crews find the exact location and understand the severity of the pothole,” he says. “We’re also now asking for an email address when you report a pothole so we can follow up if the location isn’t clear, and let you know once it’s been fixed.”
