After multiple serious crashes over the past three years, Auckland Transport (AT) is moving ahead with safety upgrades at the Wilks Road and East Coast Road intersection in Stillwater, including a new right turn bay and advance warning sign.
In the latest incident, a rubbish truck ran off the road near Jackson Way, with the driver taken to hospital in a serious condition, while two fatal crashes occurred on this stretch of road last year.
AT head of road safety engineering Michael Brown says the proposed changes will include a right turn bay on East Coast Road at its intersection with Wilks Road. The bay will provide a safe area to wait before making a right turn into Wilks Road, and will require the relocation of the existing bus shelter on East Coast Road.
The proposed works include:
Carrying out shoulder widening on the east side of East Coast Road to accommodate the right turn bay, and checking the feasibility of strengthening the shoulder on the west side of East Coast Road.
Extending the flush median to provide a 2.5 metre refuge for vehicles turning into Jackson Way.
Installing advance warning signs with supplementary “SLOW” signs to warn drivers of the approaching intersection in both directions.
AT says once confirmed, construction will begin next month or early March and is expected to be completed by the end of March.
