Warkworth Butchery’s bacon candy has won a Gold Medal at this year’s NZ Bacon and Ham Awards in the ‘flavoured’ category.
Butchery owner Rob Lees said he was proud to receive the award and especially enjoyed presenting the product to guests.
“We had to supply around 150 samples for the evening, and it was really cool watching people try them and seeing their reactions,” Rob said. “The special thing about this product is that we dehydrate the bacon. Most bacon candy is cooked and crystallised.”
Warkworth Butchery started making bacon candy about four years ago, and it sells for around $100 a kilo.
“A new addition this year was rose-shaped product, which sold for $3 each.”
The ceremony was held at The Maritime Room in Auckland on June 30 and featured 12 categories.
