Introducing: Health At Hand

The silly season is upon us and if you’d like to remain cool, calm and collected throughout, Coast residents Hugh and Paul Price have a product that may help.

Retired pharmacist Hugh’s belief in the fish-based dietary supplement called Molval comes from first-hand experience.

Twenty years ago, when Hugh was in his early 60s, stress related illness saw him spend two weeks in intensive care, followed by six months in Greenlane Hospital’s chest clinic. An operation for Empyema (a collection of fluid in a body cavity) followed.

Training horses was Hugh’s passion and when he got back on his feet, he travelled to France to find out more about a product produced by Dielen Laboratories, designed to reduce stress in horses. He became the licensee for the product in NZ and also a guinea pig for the trial of Molval – a version of the same product in a capsule designed for people.

The mix of Omega-3 and peptides in Molval is derived from the skin and carcass of a fish that is caught commercially in the North Sea. It is designed to balance blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

As a pharmacist, Hugh says it was the first time he’d taken any natural health products but having seen the effect on horses he was keen to be part of the trials.

His experience was that the product was calming – “like Valium, only natural and non-addictive”.

Following the trials, which included clinical studies at French universities and its National Institute of Nutrition, the product was launched in France and it is now sold in more than 20 countries.

Hugh says one advantage of using a natural product is that it has no side effects and is compatible with other medicines.

In the years since his operation, Hugh has improved his diet and fitness as well as taking Molval. He says the health of his heart has improved and others notice that he looks well.

Among those taking notice was his son Paul who left a job in pharmaceutical supplies to join his father. They formed Health at Hand to become the sole NZ distributors of Molval and another dietary supplement, Osteocalm – a mix of collagen, calcium and vitamins designed to improve joint mobility.

The products are available from pharmacies.
