New One Mahurangi Business Association manager Richard Hutchinson officially takes over the role today, March 16. Last week he dropped by the Mahurangi Matters offices for a quick Q&A.
What attracted you to the role of manager of One Mahurangi?
It was the chance to work for a community I care about. Warkworth is a special place with great people, a strong identity and a diverse business base. I liked the idea of being in a role that supports local business while helping to strengthen the wider community.
What experience do you bring that will shape how you approach the role?
I bring a mix of business experience, community involvement and a practical approach to getting things done. A lot of my background has been about building relationships, solving problems and working with people. That gives me a grounded, collaborative approach to the role.
I’ve lived in the area for about 15 years and have been involved with a number of local organisations. I’ve been part of Warkworth Theatre in a voluntary role for around a decade and helped revive the organisation.
Recently, I resigned as a real estate agent to avoid any conflict of interest and before that my partner and I ran the Black Dog Cafe in Matakana for several years, which gave me a good understanding of the pressures facing small businesses. We took the turnover from about $450,000 to just over $800,000 in three years.
Importantly, I’ve worked on feasibility studies and business planning for community facilities through a consultancy role, which involved working closely with councils. In my new role it’s important to understand those processes and how to communicate with council and find the right people.
What are your immediate priorities in the first few months?
To get out and meet people, listen and build a clear picture of what matters most to local businesses. I also want to strengthen communication and look for some early wins that show One Mahurangi is active, visible, and responsive.
What are the biggest challenges currently facing businesses in the Mahurangi area?
Like many places, businesses are dealing with rising costs, cautious spending and day-to-day pressure on margins. For many, it’s not just one issue but a combination of challenges that make things harder.
The key is making sure local businesses are well supported and well connected.
What role do events and promotions play in boosting the local economy?
They play an important role because they bring people into the area, create energy and encourage people to spend locally. They also help build pride in the place. Done well, they benefit the wider business community, not just one or two businesses.
There’s sometimes a perception that One Mahurangi organises many local events, but in reality the association only directly runs the Santa Parade.
Hutchinson said it was still early days and he wanted to speak with more businesses to identify opportunities and ensure he was addressing the issues that mattered most. Feedback from those conversations would then be taken back to the One Mahurangi committee and workshopped.
