Upskilling young wage earners

KGA’s Jen Smith says the workshop will be the first in a series, aimed at increasing financial literacy across the community.

Learning how to manage a pay packet, avoid unnecessary debt and start saving early are among the practical skills that will be discussed at a new financial literacy workshop in Warkworth next month.

The Financial Foundations Workshop is aimed specifically at teens and young adults, and is being run by KGA Chartered Accountants.

The session will cover smart payday habits, saving and investing, KiwiSaver, budgeting and goal setting, as well as how to make sound financial decisions.

KGA director Jen Smith says the workshop is designed to give young people practical money skills so they can manage their finances confidently, make informed decisions and work towards their goals. She says financial literacy can be particularly important at this age, when decisions about spending, borrowing and saving can establish habits which can last a lifetime.

“Understanding how interest and debt work can help young people assess credit cards, loans and buy-now-pay-later offers, while learning to budget can make it easier to balance everyday spending with longer-term goals,” she says.

“Starting to save or invest early also gives young people the advantage of time, particularly when it comes to compound returns and retirement savings through KiwiSaver.”

The workshop is the first in a planned series from KGA aimed at improving financial literacy across the wider community.

The Financial Foundations Workshop – Money Skills for Teens and Young Adults will be held at KGA Chartered Accountants, 54 Whitaker Road, Warkworth, on Wednesday October 21, from 5.30pm to 7pm. Registration costs $5 and includes pizza and drinks.
