The Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield is asking essential workers travelling back and forth between levels 3 and 4 to get a Covid-19 test within the next three or four days, even if you have no symptoms.

“We are looking at how to put in place a system to ensure that these commuting essential workers are being regularly tested to support our efforts,” he says.

Dr Bloomfield says regular surveillance of certain groups of asymptomatic essential workers will also be put in place soon.

There are 49 new cases of Covid-19 in the New Zealand community today, all in Auckland.

Dr Bloomfield says the lower number of cases is encouraging and shows the Level 4 measures are working. Today’s cases bring the total number of active cases in the community outbreak to 725.

A total of 42 cases are in hospital – six are receiving intensive care including three who are being ventilated.
