Thousands are expected to flock to Caledonian Park for the annual Waipu Classic Car and Bike Show on Sunday, February 8.
For a decade, Waipu Lions have been staging the event to raise funds for the Northland Rescue Helicopter and local projects. Last year, the club handed over $34,000 to the rescue service.
Event founder Ron Cave says the show has grown from 120 cars and 30 bikes to be Northland’s largest car show. He expects there to be at least 900 cars and 200 bikes from Auckland and across Northland this year.
“There will be everything from vintage cars to Austin-Healeys, muscle cars, special interest cars and the latest model Mustangs, Corvettes and Camaros,” Cave says.

“The day is always a lot of fun with entertainment, music and about 40 stalls selling everything from t-shirts and memorabilia to food, including the famous Waipu Lions mussel fritters. The rescue helicopter will also be in attendance.”
The cars will be judged in 20 categories, with the People’s Choice taking home a major prize. Showgoers are encouraged to dress in style as there will also be prizes for best dressed male, female and child.
Cave says the success of the show is down to the support it receives from the community and its sponsors.
“We wouldn’t be viable without them,” Cave said.
Major sponsors this year are BBS Timber, as well as Mike Whittaker Mortgages and Full Noise Panelbeaters.
Gates open at 10am and entry is $10 for both people and cars; under 12 years free.
