On the eve of Matariki, around 200 people gathered in Warkworth for the first-ever Lantern Walk organised by the Rodney Local Board.
Families arrived at around 5.30pm, with children carrying their handmade lanterns and collecting the LED candles provided by the board.
A few minutes before 6pm, the guided walk began outside Stirling Sports, following the route down the steps and along the riverbank before finishing at the Masonic Hall.
Participants made their way along the path, admiring the river lights and enjoying their lanterns as they lit up the night.
At the end of the route, participants were rewarded with a sausage sizzle and hot chocolate served by the Warkworth Scouts.
Community facilitator Jess Brown said she saw many homemade lanterns and, given the strong turnout, the organisers were considering making the event an annual tradition.
