Musos support landfill protest

The Bobby Holiday Band will be one of the headline acts.

Some of the New Zealand’s top musicians will perform at the Warkworth Town Hall next month in a concert designed to raise funds for Fight The Tip (FTT).

For the past seven years, FTT has opposed Waste Management’s plan to build a regional landfill on State Highway 1, south of Wellsford. Despite intense opposition regarding environmental and cultural risks, the Environment Court found in February that with strict conditions, the project could meet environmental standards.

Money raised from the concert on Saturday May 23 will support ongoing legal battles, including an upcoming Appeals Court case, being run in partnership with Forest & Bird.

A concert organiser Maurice Purdy says that in a remarkable show of solidarity, all musicians and support staff are donating their time, with proceeds from ticket sales going directly toward legal costs.

“This isn’t just a concert,” Purdy says. “It’s a community standing together.”

“When you buy a ticket, you’re not just attending a festival – you’re backing a community effort. Come for the music. Stay for the cause. Be part of something that matters.”

Headlining the evening are special guests from Auckland, The Bobby Holiday Band, joined by an impressive line-up of talent including Brian Jones and Andrew McLennan, of The Exponents, and Harry Lyons, of Hello Sailor.

Also appearing will be B & D, Felicity, Little Creatures, Yeah Nah, Fred Renata & The Garden Party, Melina Mieneke, and Trinity Croul.

Purdy says that together, they form a diverse musical spectrum designed to keep the crowd energised well into the night.

Behind the scenes will be musical director Clyde Tukaiora Connell, with immersive visuals provided by Bruce and Leon Ferguson, of The Dark Room.

The concert starts at 4.30pm and food trucks will be on-site offering a variety of options.

Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.co.nz – Fight The Tip Music Festival.
